Chapter 1

In chapter one of Jimmy Santiago Baca’s A Place to Stand, Jimmy Santiago Baca briefly goes into detail about his early childhood. He explains that he is from a dysfunctional family; His father is a womanizing drunk and his mother is an adulterer. His father’s drinking lead to his mother infidelity with Richard, a white American. Richard forced her to disown her culture as well as her children, Jimmy, Mieyo, and Martina. They move with their grandparents until their grandfather suddenly dies, and grandmother is forced to give them to an orphanage. Thus, creating a broken home.
