Chapter 2

In chapter two of Jimmy Santiago Baca’s A Place to Stand, Baca finally gives up on his belief that his parents would return, this is the start of his abandonment issues. Baca feels lonely in the world and his mother’s abandonment snatches his childhood away. He is now frequently running away from his orphanage. This forces Aunt Charlotte to relinquish custody from him, which makes him property of law and the D- Home. Baca is transitioning into school, where he is a star football player, but feels displaced and quits school. After reuniting with Mieyo, Jimmy Santiago Baca learns that Mieyo has been raped, which explained his violent rampage. Mieyo and Baca start getting into trouble for petty offenses. Later, Baca meets his first love, Theresa, through his fighting.
